These elections could be a big break for $10aDay

As you know, there are two elections underway in BC at both the municipal and provincial levels. These elections create a big opportunity for our future political leaders to know we expect them to implement $10aDay.

Simply put: we need to ensure that every candidate across the province knows that affordable, quality, universal child care is still a priority for British Columbians.

That’s where you come in: we need your voice

☎️ Candidates will be calling and knocking on doors and this is an opportunity to make sure they hear about $10aDay! That’s why we’ve created simple questions to ask your candidates. In the weeks ahead we’ll be launching a tool to make it easy for you to reach out to candidates directly, but in the meantime we’ve prepared key questions and talking points so you can get started now.

CANDIDATE QUESTIONS

🌇 Municipal Questions

Speaking to someone running as a School Board Trustee candidate? Or Mayor or Council? Great! Here’s what you can ask them:

  1. Parents in BC are desperate for more quality affordable child care - for children ages 0-12 years. If elected (or re-elected), do you commit to using your voice to advocate for the equitable and planned expansion of quality affordable child care in your community or school district?

  2. Child care is critical infrastructure: parents can't work without reliable, affordable care. If elected, would you help to grow this infrastructure by accessing provincial funding, collaborating with child care providers, and working with partners to access space for child care expansion on public land?

  3. If elected, will you support expanding before-and after-school child care programs to every school to meet the needs of families in our district?

🗻 Provincial Questions

Speaking to someone running to represent you in the provincial government? Wonderful! Here’s what you should ask:

  1. Access to quality $10aDay child care allows parents, especially women, to remain in the workforce, encourages children's healthy development, enables families to move out of poverty and benefits the economy by increasing tax revenues for the government. If elected, will you support universal quality $10aDay child care across British Columbia?

  2. If elected, will you support providing school districts with the mandate and resources they need to plan for, and deliver, universal school-age child care?

  3. The BC government agreed in its Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care Agreement with the federal government to develop a wage grid for early childhood educators. This has not happened yet. If elected, will you commit to supporting the development and implementation of a fair and equitable wage grid for early childhood educators in B.C.?

The main thing to get across is simple: B.C. should be building a quality, affordable, universal $10aDay system, because all children and parents deserve equal access to care. Read more about the progress BC needs here.
